Razor bumps occur on the bearded areas of men, shaved heads, women' bikini areas, underarms and legs.
Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) are formed when new hair growth (of the beard ) curls over and burrows into the neighboring skin. This causes a foreign body reaction causing an unsightly bump. The hair grows in an arch instead of vertically under the supericial layers of skin causing inflammation and irritation and becomes an ingrown hair (folliculitis). The new ingrown hair is painful and itchy which is aggravating and makes further hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing etc. impossible.
